The ninth annual Rochester Youth Triathlon, presented by Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, will be held on Saturday, July 20 at Genesee Valley Park (GVP).

The Triathlon, hosted by the Rochester Area Triathletes, is open to young people ages six to 17 years old and features the only Teen Super Sprint in New York State. Community partners and corporate sponsors like the City of Rochester, Enterprise and Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. make this triathlon possible.

There will be three different courses for the athletes to choose from. The short course includes a 50-meter swim, 2.2-mile bike ride and half-mile run. The long course is a 100-meter swim, 4.3-mile bike ride and one-mile run, and the Teen Super Sprint is 300 meters of swimming, 6.4 miles on the bike and a 1.8-mile run.

The swim is in the 50-meter outdoor pool at GVP. The bike ride is on paved bike trails along the Genesee River, and the run is on paved trails and sidewalks in the park.

All participants will get a t-shirt (register by July 6 to be guaranteed t-shirt size) and finisher’s medal. The top three finishers for the boys and girls in the Teen Super Sprint will receive awards.

Baylor Smith, age 8, and Hanna Lambie, age 7, competed for the first time in the Youth Tri last year. “It was really hard but a lot of fun,” said Smith. “I loved it,” added Lambie, “because it pushed people to do their best.”

The event is offering a discounted price for City of Rochester residents. The short and long course registration is $5 for residents and $15 for non-residents, while the Teen Super Sprint is $7 for residents and $20 for non-residents.

“The best part is seeing the kids smile running across the finish line,” said Cynthia Childs, race founder and former director, and Excellus BCBS employee.
