As individuals age, maintaining optimal health becomes increasingly important—and often more complex. To encourage people to live their healthiest possible lives, Excellus BlueCross BlueShield is reinforcing the importance of preventive care through science-driven wellness timelines.

These guidelines, grounded in recommendations from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), outline when individuals should seek routine wellness checks and screenings based on age and risk factors. From annual physicals and blood pressure monitoring to cancer screenings and mental health assessments, the recommendations are designed to empower individuals to take proactive steps toward long-term well-being.

“As we see people moving into their 60s and 70s, we know that when they get the suggested screenings in the timelines recommended, they are more likely to live healthier lives,” said Ankit Garg, M.D., VP of Medical Affairs for Excellus BlueCross BlueShield. “We understand that medical tests can be intimidating, and that life often gets in the way of scheduling care, but the reality is that only about 59 percent of our members aged 65 and older are completing their annual care visits, which are an important step in addressing preventive screenings. We’re encouraging people to take that step—not just because it’s recommended, but because these actions truly improve the quality of their lives.”

Here’s some helpful wellness guidance for individuals over age 60, based on Excellus BlueCross BlueShield’s preventive care recommendations:

Annual Care Visits

Your annual physical and annual wellness visit are important when it comes to helping you live your healthiest life. Both of these visits are with your primary care provider (PCP) and can be done on the same day if your provider’s schedule allows.

Screenings to Stay Ahead

  • Blood pressure: At least once a year
  • Cholesterol: Every 4–6 years, or more often if at risk
  • Colorectal cancer: Begin regular screenings at age 45, or earlier if at risk
  • Mammogram: Every 1–2 years for women
  • Bone density test: Especially for women 65+ or those at risk for osteoporosis
  • Diabetes screening: Annually if overweight or have risk factors

Immunizations

  • Flu shot: Every year
  • Shingles vaccine: Two doses after age 50
  • Pneumococcal vaccine: One or two doses depending on health status
  • COVID-19 vaccine: Stay up to date with current recommendations

Mental & Cognitive Health

  • Ask your provider about screenings for depression, memory loss, or cognitive decline

Fall Prevention & Bone Health

  • Discuss balance, mobility, and home safety
  • Consider vitamin D and calcium intake

Oral, Vision & Hearing Care

  • Regular dental cleanings and eye exams
  • Hearing checks, especially if you notice changes

Talk to your PCP about what you may be due for and what test is right for you. Also be sure to talk to your PCP about other topics, such as your physical activity, risk of falls, if you're having trouble hearing, or bladder concerns for example. No matter how small a concern seems, your PCP can help you develop a plan to address them.
