Preventive care matters: Annual care visits are key to healthy aging

As we age, maintaining optimal health becomes increasingly important—and often more complex. To help individuals live their healthiest lives, Excellus BlueCross BlueShield is reinforcing the importance of preventive care through science-driven wellness guidelines, including annual physicals, screenings and, for those on Medicare, annual wellness visits (AWV).

The guidelines, grounded in recommendations from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), outline when individuals should seek routine wellness care and preventive screenings based on age and risk factors. From annual physicals and blood pressure monitoring to cancer screenings and mental health assessments, the recommendations are designed to empower individuals to take proactive steps toward long-term wellbeing.

“Preventive screenings help people in their 60s and 70s live healthier lives,” says Ankit Garg, MD, VP of medical affairs at Excellus BlueCross BlueShield. “Yet only about 59% of members 65 and older complete annual visits—key to these screenings. We know tests can feel intimidating and life gets busy, but taking this step truly improves quality of life.”

Why Prevention Matters

If you only go to the doctor when you’re sick or hurt, you miss the chance to talk about staying well. Many chronic conditions—such as diabetes, heart disease, or cognitive decline—can be managed more effectively when risks are identified early. Preventive care keeps you on track with screenings and immunizations that protect your long-term health.

Annual Care Visits

Your annual physical and annual wellness visit are important when it comes to helping you live your healthiest life. Both of these visits are with your primary care provider (PCP) and can be done on the same day if your provider’s schedule allows. Based on recommendations from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and Excellus BlueCross BlueShield:

Screenings

  • Blood pressure: At least once a year
  • Cholesterol: Every 4–6 years, or more often if at risk
  • Colorectal cancer: Begin regular screenings at age 45, earlier if at risk
  • Mammogram: Every 1–2 years for women
  • Bone density: Women 65+ or those at risk for osteoporosis
  • Diabetes: Annually if overweight or at risk

Immunizations

  • Flu: Every year
  • Shingles: Two doses after age 50
  • Pneumococcal: One or two doses depending on health status, recommended starting at age 50
  • COVID-19: Stay up to date with current recommendations

Other Care

  • Mental health and cognitive screenings
  • Fall prevention and bone health discussions/assessments
  • Dental, vision, and hearing checks

What Is the Medicare Annual Wellness Visit?

The AWV is a yearly visit focused on preventive care, but it’s not the same as an annual physical. Instead, it’s a conversation and planning session with your PCP to create a personalized roadmap for staying healthy.

During this visit, your provider will:

  • Review your medical history, medications, and family health history.
  • Assess your fall risk, bladder control, and cognitive health.
  • Discuss screenings (i.e. breast and colon) and vaccines you may need.
  • Talk about advance directives—your wishes for care in the event you’re unable to make those decisions for yourself.
  • Perform a medication reconciliation: Bring a current list or all your medications to your visit. This helps your doctor ensure they're safe and appropriate for your treatment. Your doctor and health plan can also help find cost-effective options, including programs such as the Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage (EPIC) Program, that assist with medication costs.

The AWV is covered 100% by Medicare, so there’s no cost to you. Beyond the health benefits, it’s a great opportunity to strengthen your relationship with your doctor.

Talk to your PCP about what you may be due for and what tests are right for you. Also be sure to talk to your PCP about any other health concerns you may have. No matter how small an issue seems, your PCP can help you develop a plan to address it. During your visit, if you require further tests or screenings, a copayment or deductible expense may occur.
