Helping Build Healthy Futures, One Book at a Time

We know that building healthier communities goes beyond access to health care. It starts with creating opportunities for children to learn, grow, and thrive. That’s why we are proud to support the launch of the Barbershop Books program in Syracuse, an innovative initiative that combines literacy, community connection, and trusted neighborhood spaces to help children discover the joy of reading.

Earlier this week, community leaders, families, educators, librarians, barbers, and local supporters gathered at Betts Branch Library to celebrate the official launch of Barbershop Books in Syracuse. The kickoff event brought the program’s mission to life as children received haircuts while exploring books, demonstrating that reading can happen anywhere and become a natural part of everyday life.

Founded by educator and author Alvin Irby, Barbershop Books began with a simple but powerful idea: place engaging books in barbershops and salons, spaces where children already spend time, and encourage positive reading experiences outside of the classroom. What started in one New York City barbershop has grown into a nationally recognized literacy movement, helping children across the country develop stronger reading habits and greater confidence.

The connection between literacy and health may not always be obvious, but it is incredibly important. Research consistently shows that literacy is one of the most influential social determinants of health. Children who read proficiently are more likely to succeed in school, pursue higher education, secure stable employment, and make informed decisions about their health and well-being throughout their lives. By investing in literacy today, we are helping build the foundation for healthier futures tomorrow.

Through Excellus BCBS funding and the collective efforts of dedicated community partners, Syracuse is creating its own network of "literacy bubbles" where children have more opportunities to interact with books, storytelling, and positive reading role models. This work would not be possible without the collaboration of local barbershops, salons, libraries, schools, and community organizations that share a commitment to empowering the next generation.

We are especially grateful for the passionate partners who helped bring this vision to life. Their willingness to think creatively and work together demonstrates the power of community collaboration. When organizations unite around a common goal, whether improving health outcomes, advancing education, or supporting families, the impact can be transformational.

As families begin to experience Barbershop Books across Syracuse, we look forward to seeing more children discover that reading is not just something they do in school, but something they can enjoy wherever they go. Excellus BlueCross BlueShield is honored to support initiatives like this that strengthen our communities and help children build the skills they need to succeed for years to come.

Together, we are helping turn everyday spaces into places of learning, inspiration, and opportunity, one book and one child at a time.
